Shuna, prince of a poor land, watches helplessly as his subjects suffer from hunger and work themselves to death. How can they grow grain when their barren land refuses to yield it?

One fine day, a traveller mentions a miraculous golden seed that makes the plains undulate in long, fertile waves. It comes from a distant land in the west, populated by spirits hostile to humans – a land from which no one has ever returned.

Despite the sighs of the elders and his father's tears, Shuna sets off for this Eldorado on his trusty yakkuru, hoping to find something to save his people.

On the way, he frees a young slave girl, Thea, and her little sister, who are being held captive by human traffickers. Pursued by their enemies, Shuna entrusts the two girls to his yakkuru, which races north with them while he continues alone, on foot, towards the west. When he finally reaches the land of the divine beings, what he sees there will change him forever.

Will Thea see Shuna again? And will the young prince with a heart of gold bring back the precious grain?
